Refashion #2: Human Coat to Puppy Coat

Okay, first and foremost: Dogs are not people.  They don’t sleep in beds, they don’t eat chicken salad sandwiches, and, for all that is holy, they don’t wear clothes to look pretty.  Now that that’s clear, let me tell you that Doctor, the dog, has a naked underbelly! Yes, naked! No fur!  He gets so cold that his teeth chatter, especially with the winter that we’re having in Baltimore!  As a good puppy parent, I couldn’t let this go unnoticed, so I refashioned an old zip up fleece of mine to fit him. *TUTORIAL COMING SOON!*

This is what the fleece looked like before, just your run of the mill, $6 fleece from Target:

Oh, he loves it so much! Okay, maybe not the “getting into it” part, but the “not being freezing while peeing” part is pretty great.

But if we were totally honest with ourselves, we would know that this is really just an excuse to make little dog clothes.

At the beginning of this post, I was angry with you and other clothes inducing owners of pets (probably because my dog refuses to wear even a santa hat) but by the end of it I wanted to hug you for making a $6.00 sweater into a make-a-wish Dog Episode.

He -looks- so happy! And the sweater looks amazing on him. Did he sit still long enough for his measurements? Great sewing job! Great parent (^_~).

Thanks Roe! I was angry at myself, when I first started, because I always swore not to be one of those people who dressed their dog up. Did he sit for measurements? no! I had to wrangle him while he was eating and had about 30 seconds to do so. He is the most high energy dog I’ve ever met, and getting it on him is a two person adventure. But, less teeth chattering is worth it.

P.S. He wont wear a Santa Hat either, don’t feel bad.

i can’t wait to see the tutorial. i have a rat terrier and she’s cold all the time. i’ve used an old fleece of mine to make a jacket thing for her (just cut the sleeve off, snipped a couple slits for legs and voila) but there was no sense making something nice (she was 3 months old). this however, would suit her wonderfully! can’t wait to see the tut.

Can’t wait for the tutorial. I have two cairn terriers that would love to have fleece jackets. Thank you for posting the photos.
